Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

The room went completely still.
Daniel's boss set down his glass.
"What detail?"
Daniel was on his feet before I could speak.
"Meredith, don't."
But I was done being quiet.
"The Hargrove account," I said.
"The one that got Daniel this promotion.
He didn't save it alone."
I watched Daniel's face go white.
"I worked on that account for six months before I left my job.
The restructuring plan, the client retention strategy — that was my work.
Daniel submitted it after I stepped away."
His boss looked at Daniel slowly.
"Is that true?"
"She helped a little.
It was a team effort, I just—"
"I have the original files," I said.
"Dated.
On our home computer.
With my name on every draft."
The table had gone completely silent.
Daniel's colleague — a woman named Patricia who had laughed the loudest at his jokes — was now staring at the tablecloth.
Daniel reached for my arm.
"You need to stop talking right now."
I stepped back.
"Or what?
You'll remind everyone I'm just a woman who uses credit cards at Target?"
His boss cleared his throat.
"Daniel.
My office.
Monday morning."
That was when Daniel's phone buzzed on the table.
He glanced down — and something in his expression shifted.
Not anger.
Fear.
I looked at the screen before he could grab it.
The name on the message wasn't one I recognized.
But the first three words were enough to change everything.
