Chapter 1: The Woman Who Paid for Everything

My husband mocked me for being a stay-at-home mom in front of his boss.

Then I turned to his boss and mentioned one detail Daniel had conveniently left out when he got his promotion—my husband's smile vanished.

My name is Meredith.

Four years ago, after our youngest was born, Daniel started pushing me to leave my job and stay home with our four kids.

"Just for a few years," he kept saying.

"Let me focus on my career.

It'll be better for all of us."

I loved my job, but eventually, I agreed.

From then on, I handled the kids and the house while Daniel worked late, traveled, and chased the position he'd wanted for years.

When he finally got it, I was genuinely proud of him.

I just never imagined that one day he'd use my staying home to humiliate me…

Last Friday, we had dinner with Daniel's boss and coworkers.

His boss's wife turned to me.

"So, Meredith, what do you do?"

Before I could answer, Daniel laughed.

"Meredith?

She's been on vacation for four years."

The table chuckled.

"I'm raising four children."

"Exactly." He raised his glass.

"And I'm the lucky guy who gets to pay for everything."

My face burned.

Then he added,

"Her biggest financial decision is which card to use at Target."

Everyone laughed again.

I stared at him.

This was the man who had begged me to stay home.

And now, in front of the people he worked with, he was making me sound useless.

Something inside me snapped.

I pushed my chair back and stood.

"You're right," I said.

"I haven't earned a paycheck in four years."

Daniel smiled.

Then I looked at his boss.

"But since we're talking about Daniel's career…

should I tell you about the one detail he never mentioned when you gave him this position?"
