The three of us stood there frozen.
Dean looked like he might be sick.
"Come inside," he finally said.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
The young man stepped through the door.
Up close, I could see it — something in his jaw, his eyes.
Something familiar I couldn't place.
"I'm sorry to show up like this," he said to me.
"I'm Ethan."
He said his name like it should mean something.
It didn't.
"Ethan." I looked at Dean.
"Who is Ethan?"
Dean sat down heavily on the couch.
He put his face in his hands.
"Dean." My voice was shaking.
"Look at me."
He lifted his head.
"Before we got married," he said slowly.
"There was someone.
It was brief.
I didn't know.
Carol, I swear I didn't know until eight weeks ago."
The room tilted.
"Didn't know what?"
Ethan answered quietly.
"That he was my father."
I heard the words.
I understood them.
But my body went completely still.
Twenty-five years.
A son.
A whole life Dean never knew existed.
And then Ethan reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an envelope and held it toward me — not toward Dean.
Toward me.
"There's something else," he said.
"Something my mother asked me to give you directly.
She said you deserve to know the full truth."
My hand was trembling as I reached for it.
