Chapter 2: What She Left at the Table

I reached the bottom of the stairs just as Lucas spun around to face me.
His face was white.
"What did you do?" he whispered.
I shifted one twin onto my hip and looked past him at the dinner table.
There, propped against the flower centerpiece where everyone could see it, was a single piece of paper.
A printed note.
My handwriting.
*"The woman who cooked every dish on this table gave birth to twins 21 days ago.
She was told she wasn't presentable enough to sit here.
Please enjoy the meal she made anyway."*
The silence was total.
Then Lucas's boss — a tall woman in her sixties — slowly set down her wine glass.
"You have a wife who did all of this," she said quietly, "three weeks postpartum?"
Lucas opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
"Lucas." Her voice had changed.
"This is the woman you hid upstairs?"
One of the other guests — a man I didn't recognize — was already looking at Lucas differently.
Not with admiration.
With something much closer to pity.
Lucas turned back to me.
His jaw was tight.
"We'll talk about this later," he said under his breath.
I smiled at him the same way I had an hour ago.
"Of course we will."
Then his boss stood up, walked around the table, and held out her hand to me.
"I'd very much like to meet the woman who made this dinner."
Lucas went completely still.
And that's when I noticed the other guest pull out his phone.
