Chapter 1: The Welcome Home She Never Planned

My husband left me home with the kids while he took his mother on a luxury cruise — when they returned, his mother stepped through the front door, saw what had changed, and screamed, "Oh no!
How dare you!"
David and I met in college.
Back then, he made me feel like I was the most important person in the world.
He was also a loving father to our two kids.
The one constant problem in our marriage was his mother, Brenda.
She always seemed to treat me like competition.
For eight years, I put up with the guilt trips, the comments, and the way she constantly pushed David to choose her over us.
Then, three weeks ago, I hit my limit.
The kids had a terrible flu; I was exhausted from balancing work and caring for them, and David casually told me he was leaving for a fourteen-day Mediterranean cruise with Brenda.
"She needs to relax," he said while packing.
"You can handle things here."
I was furious, but what I discovered two days later was much worse.
I opened our banking app.
Our savings were almost gone.
David hadn't paid for the trip with a "work bonus" like he'd told me.
He had taken the $9,500 we'd spent years saving for our children's future and used it to pay for Brenda's premium suite.
That was the moment something in me changed.
I didn't cry.
I didn't call him.
I had fourteen days before they came home, and I used every one of them.
By the time their cruise ended, I had prepared a welcome-home surprise neither of them was expecting.
Yesterday, David and Brenda finally returned, tanned, relaxed, and laughing as they walked up to the house.
Brenda stepped through the front door first.
She glanced into the living room.
Then her bags slipped from her hands.
"Oh no!" she screamed.
"How dare you!"

What did she find inside that house?

And what will David say when he sees it?
