Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Box

I asked Daniel to calm down and tell me what was in the box.
He was barely coherent.
But eventually the words came out.
Elliot had filled the box with photographs.
Not just any photographs.
Every single family photo from the past eighteen years.
Birthdays.
Holidays.
First days of school.
Seven boys growing up.
Daniel holding each baby at the hospital.
Daniel at every Christmas morning.
Daniel at every Little League game.
And on top of the pile, Elliot had placed a handwritten note.
It read:
*"Dad, we wanted you to have these.
Since you're starting a new life, we thought you should know exactly what you're leaving behind.
We love you.
But we won't pretend this didn't happen.
— Your seven sons."*
Daniel was furious.
"You put him up to this.
I know you did."
"I had no idea what was in that box, Daniel."
"He's a child.
He doesn't understand what he's doing."
I looked over at Elliot, sitting quietly on the couch, watching me.
He was sixteen years old.
He understood exactly what he was doing.
Then Daniel said something that made my bl00d run cold.
"Tell Elliot that if he pulls something like this again, he won't like what happens."
I went completely still.
