Chapter 1: The Day He Chose Her

My husband left me and our 7 sons for my sister because she was "not burdened with children" — then our oldest son sent him a special wedding gift he would never forget.
My husband, Daniel, and I had been married for eighteen years when, one evening, he suddenly told me:
"Let's not make a scene.
I'm leaving you.
I'm with Claire now."
My stomach dropped.
"Claire?
My younger sister?
How could you do this to me?"
He just shrugged and said:
"I'm tired of our lives revolving around diapers, crying, and endless bills.
I've had enough.
I want to live for myself now.
Claire isn't burdened with children, and I like that."
I felt like the ground disappeared beneath my feet.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Daniel admitted that he'd been cheating on me with Claire for more than six months.
I had spent eighteen years with this man.
We had wanted every one of our boys.
And Claire?
She was my own sister.
How could she do this?
Two of the people closest to me, the people I trusted more than anyone in the world, had betrayed me completely.
I still remember him slamming the door behind him while I stood there with our sons, watching him walk away.
When I called Claire to tell her exactly what I thought, she just laughed and said:
"Oh, honey, don't be so dramatic.
Love is love.
Daniel and I are simply meant to be together.
That's all."
It felt like everything around me was collapsing.
Then came the divorce.
It was probably one of the hardest periods of my life.
I just kept forcing myself to function because I had seven children who needed me.
But when Claire and Daniel announced their wedding on the very same day our divorce became official, I nearly fainted.
God, how could they?
Even my parents took Claire's side, saying she had a right to be happy too.
Claire and Daniel invited me and the kids to their wedding.
They didn't even seem remotely ashamed.
On the day of the wedding, I simply sat on the couch with the kids, wrapped myself in a blanket, and watched movies with them.
I was trying not to think about how much everything hurt.
But suddenly, my oldest son, Elliot, said:
"Mom, we didn't go to Dad's wedding.
But I've been preparing a gift for him all week, and I already packed it.
I'd like to have an Uber driver deliver the box there."
I didn't understand why Elliot had prepared a gift for them.
But I also knew the kids might still have a relationship with their father someday, and I couldn't forbid that.
So I arranged a package delivery through Uber, and Elliot asked the driver to take the box straight to the restaurant where the wedding was being held.
Before it was delivered, Elliot called Daniel and apologized for not being able to come, but told him he'd sent a gift.
I had no idea what Elliot had put inside.
We went back to watching our movie.
About an hour later, my phone rang.
It was Daniel.
He was practically screaming:
"What is this?
How dare you do this to me?
Cancel it immediately!"
Oh, when Daniel told me what had been inside that box, I couldn't help but smile.
---
What did Elliot put in that box — and why did it make Daniel panic on his own wedding day?
