Chapter 5: The Name Inside the Envelope

My name on the front was written in careful, deliberate letters.

The kind of handwriting that belongs to someone who learned it properly, who was taught to slow down and form each stroke.

I didn't recognize it.

I slid my finger under the seal.

Inside was a single folded page and a smaller photograph, face-down.

I read the page first.

*"My name is Ruth Calloway.

I was a nurse at Hargrove Memorial for nineteen years.

I am the person Carl refers to as R.

I am writing this letter because Carl asked me to, and because I believe you deserve to hear it from me directly."*

I looked up at my father.

He was watching me.

"Ruth Calloway," I said.

"Do I know her?"

He was quiet for just a beat too long.

"Dad."

*"I was present the night your daughter Emily was admitted.

I was not present for what happened after — I was removed from her case before the end of my shift, which I now understand was deliberate.

I spent years not knowing what I had been part of.

When I finally understood, I went looking for the people responsible.

That search is how I found Carl."*

I turned the page over.

There was more on the back.

*"I need to tell you something about the man who came to your house that night.

The man who sat in your kitchen and threatened your family.

I know who he is.

I have known for some time.

And I think, when you see the photograph, you will understand why Carl insisted your father be the one to give you this box in person."*

I picked up the photograph and turned it over.

It was a surveillance image.

Grainy, taken from a distance, the way security footage looks when someone has printed a still frame.

Two men standing outside a building I didn't recognize.

One of them had his back to the camera.

The other one was facing it.

The other one was someone I had seen at Lily's birthday party less than twenty-four hours ago.

My father's oldest friend.

A man who had been in our lives since before I was born.

A man who had sat at our table yesterday and eaten cake and sung happy birthday and hugged Lily and told her she was growing up so beautifully.

I set the photograph down.

"Dad." My voice came out very quiet.

"Tell me this isn't what I think it is."

He closed his eyes.

"His name is in Carl's files," he said.

"He was the one who tipped off the network that Carl had been looking.

He was the one who arranged for the man to come to your house.

He has been inside this family for thirty years and I didn't know.

I swear to you, I did not know until Carl told me six months ago."

"He was here yesterday." I stood up.

"He held my daughter."

"I know."

"He was in this house."

"I know." My father's voice was barely holding.

"That's why Carl's last letter said what it said.

The case is nearly complete.

Ruth has the documentation.

Carl has the chain of evidence.

But they needed one more thing." He looked at me steadily.

"They needed you to know.

Because the next step requires you."

My phone buzzed on the counter.

An unknown number.

I picked it up.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Careful.

"Is this Sarah?"

"Yes."

"My name is Ruth Calloway.

I'm sorry to call so late.

But something has changed in the last few hours, and Carl asked me to reach you tonight." A pause.

"He's close.

May you like

But so are they.

And they know the box has been opened."
