Chapter 1: The Box My Father Should Have Opened Years Ago

My husband left me after we lost one of our twin daughters — but on her sister's 18th birthday, my father came up to me and said, "He made me swear I wouldn't tell you anything until today."

When my twin daughters, Lily and Emily, were 5 years old, Emily suddenly became ill.

An ambulance rushed her to the hospital, and a few hours later, a doctor came out and told me Emily hadn't made it.

I didn't know how I was supposed to keep living.

And then something else happened.

After her funeral, my husband, Carl, came over to me and said:

"I'm sorry, but I can't do this anymore."

And then he left.

He abandoned me and our daughter, Lily.

Grief completely consumed me.

I'd lost my daughter, and I thought Carl and I would somehow get through it together.

But that never happened.

The only person who always supported me was my father.

He was always there.

He was there when the girls were born.

He babysat them all the time.

He would come over after work just to see them.

God, he loved those girls so much.

When Emily d*ed, it nearly broke him.

So we stayed close and tried to get through it together.

Things were incredibly difficult for me, but he helped me raise Lily.

I honestly don't know how I would've managed without him.

Thirteen years passed.

During all those years, I never heard anything from Carl.

But that was his choice.

And eventually, I stopped even wondering how he could've abandoned us like that.

Until yesterday.

Yesterday was Lily's birthday.

We celebrated her 18th birthday with our family, and it was honestly a wonderful day.

Late that evening, after Lily had gone to bed, while I was still in the kitchen cleaning up the dishes, my father came over to me.

He looked pale.

I asked if something was wrong.

He looked down and said:

"Honey, I've done something terrible to you.

Please forgive me."

I stared at him in confusion.

"Dad, what are you talking about?"

He handed me a box and said in a trembling voice:

"Carl made me swear that I wouldn't tell you anything until today.

Until Lily turned eighteen.

Honey, Carl didn't leave for no reason.

There's something you never knew."

I had to sit down because my knees started shaking.

"What is going on?"

He said:

"Open the box, and you'll understand everything.

What happened to Emily wasn't what you thought."

I nearly collapsed when I opened the box.

What was inside that box?
