Chapter 2: What Daniel Carried in His Pocket

It was our son, Daniel.

He'd walked in just minutes after I arrived.

I hadn't told him about the dinner.

He must have found out on his own.

He stood at the edge of the table, looking at Peter.

Then he looked at Mia.

His voice was calm — almost too calm.

"Dad.

What is this?"

Peter didn't flinch.

"This is none of your business."

"You brought another woman to your anniversary dinner." Daniel didn't raise his voice.

"Mom is sitting right there."

"Your mother made her choice," Peter said.

"She went behind my back.

There are consequences."

Daniel pulled out a chair and sat down slowly.

The whole restaurant was watching now.

"You want to talk about going behind your back?" He reached into his jacket and placed something flat on the table.

A folded piece of paper.

"I found this last week.

I wasn't going to say anything.

But now—"

Peter's face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

"Daniel.

Put that away."

"What is it?" I asked.

Neither of them answered me.

Mia had stopped smiling.

Daniel looked at his father and said quietly, "Tell her.

Or I will."
