Chapter 1: The Lesson He Thought He'd Teach Me

My husband invited another woman to our 35th anniversary dinner and said that I "needed to learn a lesson." He thought he'd humiliate me in front of the whole restaurant…

until someone else decided to teach him one instead.

I'm 58.

Peter and I have been married since I was twenty-three.

For weeks, he'd been angry because I'd refused to do something he called "a small favor."

Our youngest son had recently asked if he could borrow money to keep his business afloat.

I said yes.

Peter said absolutely not.

When I quietly transferred the money from my own inheritance anyway, he called me "disloyal." For days, he barely spoke to me.

Then, out of nowhere, he suggested we celebrate our anniversary at the same little Italian restaurant where we'd had our first date.

"The same little Italian place," he said, smiling.

"Just like our first date."

I thought maybe he'd finally let it go.

I even wore the pearl earrings he'd given me after our first child was born.

When I arrived, Peter wasn't alone.

A young woman — possibly twenty-nine — was seated beside him, already sipping wine.

"This is Mia," Peter said without even standing up.

"She's been helping me realize what a supportive wife is supposed to look like."

The restaurant fell silent.

He wanted people to hear that.

He wanted me to hear that.

Then he smiled and added,

"You need to learn a lesson.

Maybe watching someone who actually respects her partner will teach you something."

Mia laughed.

Several people turned to look at our table.

Peter leaned back in his chair, smiling.

He was sure I'd stay quiet.

Instead, five minutes later…

…someone else stood up and said something that wiped the smile right off his face in front of the entire restaurant.

What did that person say — and how did Peter react when he realized the whole room was watching *him*?
