Chapter 2: The Message on His Phone

Inside was a large battery-powered spider.

It sprang toward Glen’s hand, and his friends jumped back as he dropped the bag.

“What is wrong with you?” Glen shouted.

I looked him straight in the eye.

“You didn’t care that your noise was frightening a sick child, so I thought you deserved a fright too.”

The room went quiet.

Then one of his friends, Mark, frowned.

“Sick child?

Glen told us Emily was better.

He said you agreed to tonight.”

Every man turned toward Glen.

“You lied to them?” I asked.

Before he could answer, Emily appeared in the hallway, clutching her blanket.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “why did you tell that woman on the phone that you wished Mommy and I would go away?”

Glen’s face lost all its color.

“What woman?” I demanded.

At that exact moment, his phone lit up on the table.

A message from someone named Vanessa appeared on the screen:

“Did she believe your story?

Call me when they’re asleep.”

Glen lunged for the phone—but Mark picked it up first.
