Chapter 1: The Night Glen Would Never Forget

My husband invited 15 friends over to watch football while our daughter was sick, saying, "That's not my problem" — so I smiled and did something that made him scream.
Our 6-year-old daughter, Emily, became sick a few days ago.
I took time off work to look after Emily.
The first two days of her illness were difficult.
Her fever kept rising for almost two days and would barely come down.
It would go down for a while and then climb again.
We visited the doctor.
We just had to get through those first few days.
I was on my feet for those two days and didn't sleep at night because I was repeatedly checking Emily's temperature, changing her pajamas, putting cool compresses on her, bringing her something to drink, giving her medicine, and so on.
I was also really worried, so I stayed by her side the entire time.
Emily's fever finally went down.
I still had a ton of housework to do, and I was already looking forward to the evening when I could just collapse into bed and finally get some sleep.
But apparently, that wasn't going to happen.
My husband, Glen, walked over to me and said:
"Honey, there's an important game tonight, remember?
Well, I invited all my friends over.
We're going to watch it in the living room on the big TV."
Half-asleep, I had to ask him to repeat himself.
"Glen, what game?
I haven't slept in two days.
Emily is still sick.
I finally want to get some sleep, and Emily needs peace and quiet."
He just shrugged and said:
"Listen, I've already made plans with my friends, and I'm not canceling our get-together."
I tried to remain calm.
"You're going to be really loud.
I know you guys.
But please move your game to one of your friends' houses.
I really want to finally get some sleep."
He just scoffed and said:
"That's not my problem!
What am I supposed to tell the guys?
No, I'm not canceling anything."
I actually gripped a chair in the kitchen.
No matter how much I tried to explain to Glen that this wasn't normal, he kept saying he "didn't care" and that I was "making a big deal out of nothing."
Well, then I decided to give Glen a football night he would never forget.
That evening, he brought his friends over anyway, and they shouted throughout the game.
Neither Emily nor I could sleep properly.
I expected that, so I had planned a special surprise for Glen.
Later that night, while they were all sitting in the living room shouting at every touchdown, I walked out with a bag of snacks.
Glen was smiling until he opened that bag.
Oh, he screamed, and not because someone had scored a touchdown, but because there was something inside that made all his friends' hair stand on end.
