Chapter 2: Don't Call the Police

The freezer was packed with cash.
Stacks of it.
Rubber-banded bundles stuffed into zip-lock bags, layered all the way to the top.
Rachel's hand was shaking.
"Mom…
how much is that?"
I couldn't answer.
I couldn't even breathe.
I counted what I could see.
Thousands.
Maybe tens of thousands.
I had no idea.
My phone buzzed.
Jacob again.
"Do NOT open that freezer.
I mean it."
Too late.
I called him back.
This time he picked up on the first ring.
"How much is in there, Jacob?"
Silence.
"Jacob."
"Just close it.
Please.
I'll explain everything when I get home."
"You'll explain it NOW."
Another long pause.
Then, quietly:
"It's not what you think."
"Then what IS it?
Because right now it looks like you've been hiding cash in our garage for years and lying to my face."
He didn't answer that.
What he said next stopped me cold.
"Don't tell anyone.
Not your sister.
Not your mother.
Nobody.
And whatever you do — don't call the police."
The line went d\*ad.
Rachel was staring at me.
"Mom," she whispered.
"Who is Dad?"
