Chapter 1: The Freezer He Never Let Us Touch

My husband gave me and our four kids the same strange rule: never open the garage freezer—then it broke while he was away, and my oldest daughter screamed, "Mom, come here!
You need to see this!"
I (38F) and my husband, Jacob (40M), have four kids.
Our oldest, Rachel, is 16, and our youngest is 6.
For as long as I can remember, Jacob had one rule nobody was allowed to question.
The old chest freezer in our garage was off-limits.
"Don't open it," he'd say.
Not "don't take anything."
Not "ask first."
Just don't open it.
I assumed it held meat, fishing bait, or something equally boring.
Whenever the kids asked why, Jacob always gave the same answer.
"Because I said so."
It became a family joke.
Until last month.
Jacob left for a four-day business trip, and on the second night, Rachel came into the kitchen looking worried.
"Mom, something smells strange in the garage."
I followed her out.
The freezer had stopped humming.
A puddle of water was spreading beneath it.
I called Jacob.
No answer.
I texted him that the freezer had broken.
Almost immediately, he replied:
"Don't touch it.
I'll deal with it when I get home."
That was the moment I started feeling uneasy.
It was nearly 80 degrees outside.
Whatever was inside couldn't stay there for two more days.
I was still staring at Jacob's message when I heard Rachel call from the garage.
Then she screamed.
"Mom!
Come here!
You need to see this!"
I hurried back.
Rachel was standing beside the freezer, her hand gripping the lid.
When I saw what was inside, I was stunned.
---
What was inside that freezer — and why did Jacob forbid anyone from opening it for years?
