Chapter 2: What My Son Already Knew

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

I sat in that truck for a long time, just staring at the screen.

The address was forty minutes away.

A street I had never heard of.

A town Richard had never once mentioned in forty years of marriage.

I told myself there was a simple explanation.

A mistake.

An old entry.

Something innocent.

But I couldn't make myself believe it.

When I got home, my eldest son, Daniel, was waiting in the kitchen.

He took one look at my face and went very still.

"Mom?

What's wrong?"

I showed him the screen.

I had taken a photo of it on my phone.

He stared at it for a long moment.

Too long.

"That's nothing," he said.

"Probably just an old work address.

Dad drove all over the place."

"Daniel." I kept my voice steady.

"Do you know what that address is?"

He wouldn't look at me.

"Daniel.

Look at me."

He set his coffee down slowly.

"Mom, some things are better left alone."

My chest went cold.

"How long have you known?" I whispered.

He didn't answer.

And that silence told me everything.

I walked back out to the truck, typed that address into the GPS, and started driving.
