Every eye at that table turned to Jacob.
He didn't rush.
He held his glass steady and looked directly at his father.
"A real man doesn't measure his wife's worth in inches," he said.
"He measures it in years.
In sacrifice.
In the nights she stayed up so you could sleep.
In the mornings she smiled so we wouldn't worry."
Jared's smirk faded.
"Jacob—" he started.
"I'm not finished, Dad."
The room stayed completely still.
Even Jessica had stopped moving.
"Mom walked every single morning this year," Jacob continued.
"Through winter.
Through pain.
Through every cruel thing you said to her.
And she still made sure dinner was on this table tonight."
He set his glass down.
"You should be ashamed of yourself."
Jared's face went dark.
He pushed back his chair.
"You don't speak to me like that in my own house."
"Then start acting like the man of this house."
