Chapter 1: The Woman He Stopped Seeing

My husband demanded I get liposuction because I was "not as thin as his brother's wife" — but during a family dinner, our oldest son stood up and wiped the smile right off his face.
After I gave birth to our second child, my body changed.
Then thyroid problems made losing weight even harder.
I changed my diet, walked every morning, and celebrated every pound that came off.
But my husband, Jared, developed a cruel habit of comparing me to other women — especially his brother's wife, Jessica.
One afternoon, after a family barbecue, he looked me up and down and chuckled.
"Did you see Jessica's waist?
Now look at yours.
Standing beside her, you look like you could be her grandmother."
I locked myself in the bathroom afterward so our children wouldn't see me cry.
But our oldest son, Jacob, was already old enough to understand everything.
More than once, he heard Jared's comments from the hallway or caught me wiping my eyes in the kitchen afterward.
He never confronted his father then.
"Mom, don't listen to him," he whispered once.
"You're beautiful.
And you're the best mom in the world."
I always smiled for him.
Then I cried after he left the room.
As always, Jared followed his cruelty with that soft, reasonable voice I had grown to hate.
"I'm telling you because I love you.
Other husbands would have already left."
Soon, comments weren't enough.
He started sending me links to cosmetic surgeons and insisting I needed liposuction and breast implants.
Because of my health condition, elective surgery wasn't considered safe for me.
Jared knew that.
He still cornered me in our bedroom one night, blocking the doorway with his arms crossed.
"If you refuse to do anything about your body," he said, "don't expect me to stay forever."
I wish I could say I threw him out that night.
Instead, I swallowed my humiliation because I was terrified of breaking apart the family we had built.
Then came last Sunday.
Jared's brother and Jessica joined us for dinner.
Jessica arrived in a fitted red dress, and the second she stepped through the door, I saw Jared's eyes travel slowly over her.
He didn't even bother hiding his smile.
Halfway through dinner, he leaned back in his chair and looked straight at me.
"See, honey?" he said loudly.
"If Jessica were my wife, I'd proudly take her anywhere.
With you, I'm embarrassed to even walk into a grocery store."
The room went dead silent.
Then I felt Jacob's hand briefly touch my shoulder.
His chair scraped hard against the floor.
Our son stood up.
He calmly picked up his glass, looked around the table, and then fixed his eyes on his father.
"Everyone," he said, "I'd like to make a toast."
Jared actually smirked, apparently expecting a joke.
"It's one wise lesson for my dad," he continued.
"So please, Dad…
listen carefully."

What did Jacob say next — and did Jared's smile finally disappear for good?
