Chapter 2: What She Left Behind

I stood there staring at him, completely stunned.
"What are you talking about?" I said.
"What did your mother do?"
Zion's hands were shaking.
His face was red, his eyes wild.
He looked like a man who had just had the ground ripped out from under him.
"The will," he said.
"She changed it.
Everything — the house, the savings, all of it.
She left it to you."
I couldn't speak.
"You spent all that time with her," he said, his voice dropping into something colder.
"You knew exactly what you were doing."
"I was caring for her," I said.
"Because you wouldn't."
He stepped closer.
"Don't play innocent.
You turned her against me."
"Zion." I kept my voice steady.
"I didn't even know she had a will."
He laughed, but there was no humor in it.
"Then explain why the lawyer called me this morning and read me a letter she wrote — with your name in it.
A letter she wrote three weeks before she d\*ed."
My chest tightened.
"What did the letter say?" I asked.
He went quiet for a moment.
Then he looked at me with something I hadn't expected.
Not rage.
Not hatred.
Fear.
"She knew," he said quietly.
"About everything."
