Chapter 1: The People I Trusted Most

My husband cheated with my sister while I was caring for his dying mother — after the funeral, we divorced and they got engaged, but days later, he stormed into my house screaming, "You!

You knew from the beginning that my mother would do this!"

A year ago, I never could've imagined how quickly my entire life would turn upside down.

It started when my mother-in-law, Valerie, was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

My husband, Zion, was constantly busy with work, so I became the one who took her to appointments, cooked for her, helped around the house, and stayed by her side on the hardest days.

Valerie was a wonderful woman, and I couldn't let her face something so terrifying alone.

Zion constantly thanked me for everything I was doing for his mother.

All the while, the two people I trusted most were betraying me in the cruelest way possible.

One evening, I came home from Valerie's earlier than expected.

Zion wasn't supposed to be home, but his car was in the driveway.

The moment I stepped inside, I heard my sister's voice coming from the living room.

I followed it and stopped cold.

She was in Zion's arms, and before either of them noticed me, he leaned down and kissed her.

There was no explanation that could make what I'd just seen innocent.

But as devastated as I was, I couldn't abandon Valerie.

She had done nothing wrong, and after months of caring for her, I loved her too much to leave when she needed me most.

She passed away several weeks later.

After the funeral, everything moved so fast that the next few months barely felt real.

Zion and I divorced, and almost immediately afterward, he and my sister announced their engagement.

I cut them both out of my life and thought I was finally done with them.

Then, only days later, someone started pounding on my front door.

When I opened it, Zion stormed inside, furious.

"You!" he screamed.

"You knew from the beginning that my mother would do this!"
