Chapter 2: The Girl in the Doorway

The door swung open before anyone could stop it.

A young woman stood in the doorway.

She looked about twenty-two.

Dark hair.

Perfect little fingers wrapped around the door frame.

She was shaking.

"Please." Her voice broke.

"Please don't take her away from me."

The doctor stepped forward.

"Miss, you need to—"

"She's my daughter." The young woman's eyes locked onto mine.

"And you're my mother."

The room went completely silent.

I couldn't breathe.

"That's not possible," I whispered.

"Your name is on my birth certificate." Tears were streaming down her face.

"I've been looking for you for three years."

Christopher still wouldn't look at me.

"Christopher." My voice came out flat.

"What do you know about this?"

He said nothing.

"Christopher.

Look at me."

He finally turned.

And the expression on his face told me everything.

He already knew.

He had known before he ever called me that night.

The doctor placed a second document on the table beside the lab report.

It was older.

Worn at the edges.

I looked down.

It was a consent form.

Dated 1999.

My signature was at the bottom.

But I had never signed anything in 1999.

I had never even been to this hospital.

My hands started shaking.

"Who signed this?" I asked.

Nobody answered.
