Chapter 2: The Name That Slipped Through

She said it again, softer this time.

"Natty Bug."

My throat closed.

I couldn't speak.

I couldn't move.

I just knelt there on the pavement with my hands shaking, staring at this woman who had spent twenty years sleeping on sidewalks — and who had just used the only name my mother ever called me.

David helped us both up.

Mae looked confused, like the word had slipped out of somewhere she couldn't reach.

"Did I say something?" she asked.

"Yes," I whispered.

"You did."

That night, she sat at our kitchen table wrapped in a blanket, both hands around a mug of tea.

I watched her from across the room and tried to hold myself together.

Then she looked up and said quietly:

"There was a man.

Before the fire.

He came to the house that morning.

I don't remember his face…

but I remember he was angry.

And I remember he knew your father."

I felt the air leave the room.

"Mae — do you remember his name?"

She closed her eyes.

Her hands tightened around the mug.

"He said if she told anyone…

the little girl would be next."

She opened her eyes and looked directly at me.

"I think I was trying to protect someone.

I think that's why I ran."

My legs gave out.

I sat down hard on the chair across from her.

Because the man she was describing — the timeline, the morning, the threat —

matched someone who was still in my life today.

What Natty discovered about that man changed everything she thought she knew.
