Chapter 2: The Son Who Was Listening

Standing beside the captain was our eldest son, Daniel.
He was in full uniform.
Captain's stripes on his shoulders.
The same airline.
The same flight.
My son had been flying this plane.
I couldn't speak.
I just stood there with tears running down my face while Daniel stepped forward and wrapped both arms around me.
"Happy anniversary, Mom," he said quietly.
"You deserved better than row 34."
Then he looked past me at Richard.
The warmth left his voice completely.
"Dad.
I heard what you said to her at the gate.
So did half the terminal."
Richard's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
"I arranged this upgrade six weeks ago," Daniel said.
"Mom's moving to first class for the rest of the flight.
Her seat is ready."
"You had no right—"
"I had every right." Daniel's voice didn't rise.
That was worse somehow.
"She raised five children.
She never once asked for anything.
You don't get to tell her to be grateful for economy on her anniversary."
Richard turned to me, his expression shifting fast — embarrassment becoming something harder.
"Margaret.
Don't you dare make a scene."
But it was already too late for that.
Because the other passengers in first class had heard everything.
And one of them — a woman I had never seen before — was staring at Richard like she knew exactly who he was.
