Chapter 1: The Breadwinner's Wife

My husband bought himself first class and left me in economy on our 25th anniversary—then the captain announced my name over the speaker and asked me to come forward alone.
For twenty-five years, I kept our family running while my husband, Richard, built his career.
I stayed home with our five children, packed lunches, sat through fevers and school plays, cooked, cleaned, and stretched every paycheck when money was tight.
Richard loved calling himself "the breadwinner." He rarely mentioned what made his sixty-hour workweeks possible.
So when he surprised me with a trip to Hawaii for our anniversary, I thought maybe he finally wanted to celebrate us.
At the airport, I discovered he'd booked himself in first class and me in economy.
"You're serious?"
"My back can't handle six hours in those tiny seats," he said.
"Then why didn't you book two first-class tickets?"
Richard rolled his eyes.
"Because I'm the one who paid for them.
You haven't brought home a paycheck in twenty-five years.
Be grateful you're going at all."
Several people nearby heard him, and I wanted to disappear.
For the first two hours, I sat in row 34 between strangers while Richard drank champagne behind the curtain.
It was our 25th anniversary, and somehow I was spending it alone.
Four hours into the flight, the cabin intercom crackled.
"This is your captain speaking.
Would Mrs.
Margaret H.
please remain seated until a flight attendant reaches you?
We'd like you to come forward.
Margaret H.—economy cabin."
I raised my hand like a schoolgirl.
Every head around me turned.
A flight attendant appeared beside my row and smiled.
"Mrs.
H.?
Please come with me."
"Is something wrong?"
"You'll understand in a moment."
I followed her toward the front, my heart pounding.
As we passed first class, Richard shot out of his seat like something had burned him.
"Margaret." His voice was low and tight.
"What is going on?
Where are they taking you?"
"I don't know," I said honestly.
"I forbid you to go up there." He grabbed my arm.
"Do you hear me?
I forbid it."
The flight attendant stepped between us with quiet authority.
"Sir.
Please return to your seat."
"I'm her husband!"
"And she has been asked to come forward.
Please sit down."
He didn't return to his seat.
He followed us.
When we reached the front galley, the cockpit door opened.
The captain stepped out.
I looked at his face and forgot how to breathe.
Then I noticed what was waiting beside him.
My hand flew to my mouth.
"Oh my God..."
Behind me, Richard had pushed as far forward as the flight attendant would allow.
The moment he saw the captain—and then what was beside him—his face went from red to white in under a second.
"What the hell," he said.
"What the hell is going on?"
