Chapter 2: The Envelope He Wrote While He Was Still Breathing

My hands were shaking before he even showed me what it was.
The doctor reached behind his back and held out a small sealed envelope.
Mark's handwriting was on the front — my name, written carefully, like he had taken his time.
"He asked me to make sure you were alone when you read it," the doctor said quietly.
"He was very specific about that."
I couldn't speak.
I just stared at my own name in his handwriting.
"There's something else," the doctor said.
He hesitated, like he was choosing his next words carefully.
"Mark also left a separate letter.
Not for you."
I looked up.
"Then who is it for?"
He didn't answer right away.
He glanced toward the end of the hallway again, then back at me.
"He said you would understand once you read yours first."
I tore the envelope open right there in the corridor.
My daughter was still weeks away from being born.
I was still wearing the same clothes I had worn when Mark took his last breath.
The first line stopped me completely.
*There is something I never told you.
Something I should have told you before we got married.
I'm sorry I waited this long.*
I pressed my back against the cold wall.
Whatever Mark had been hiding from me — it was bigger than I had imagined.
