Chapter 1: The Last Gift He Left Behind
My husband became an organ donor as his final wish — after he died, his doctor stopped me and said, "There's something he made me promise to give you only after he was gone."
Mark and I had been married for three years when I finally became pregnant with the child we had dreamed about for so long.
For six months, we were happier than we had ever been.
Then Mark received a devastating diagnosis.
The doctors said he had no more than three months left.
He might never live long enough to hold our daughter.
That evening, we sat together on the porch.
Mark rested one hand on my belly and felt her kick beneath his palm.
"If my organs are still healthy when the time comes, I want them donated," he said.
"Please don't talk about dying while she's moving," I whispered.
"That's why I have to talk about it."
His eyes stayed on my stomach.
"If I can't stay and watch her grow up, maybe part of me can give another parent more time with their child."
Mark declined much faster than either of us expected.
By my eighth month, I was fastening the buttons on his shirts and looking away whenever he had to stop halfway to the bathroom to catch his breath.
Then, several weeks before the end, he began asking to speak with his doctor privately.
Whenever I asked what they discussed, Mark simply squeezed my fingers.
"There's something I need to arrange.
Please trust me."
We had never kept secrets from each other, especially not then.
But Mark refused to explain, so I respected his wish.
He passed away in the hospital with my hand wrapped around his.
Afterward, I sat alone signing the final donation forms while my tears blurred his name on every page.
Every signature broke my heart, but this was what Mark had wanted.
I had to honor the last gift he had chosen to give.
I was nearly at the hospital exit when I heard hurried footsteps behind me.
"Wait!
Please, don't leave yet!"
Mark's doctor was rushing toward me.
His face was pale, and one hand was hidden behind his back.
Something in his voice made me stop immediately.
He glanced down the empty hallway before speaking.
"Mark gave me something three weeks ago," he said.
"His instructions were very clear.
Under no circumstances was I to show it to you while he was still alive."
