Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

My hands were shaking as I took the paper from him.

It was a letter.

Michael's handwriting.

"Read it," Ethan said quietly.

"Please."

The first line stopped my breath.

*"If you're reading this, then Ethan kept his promise.

And I'm sorry I never kept mine."*

"What promise?" I whispered.

"What are you talking about?"

Ethan stood up and walked to the window.

He couldn't look at me.

"Michael and I made a deal.

Years ago.

Before you ever met him."

"What kind of deal?"

He turned around, and the look on his face made my stomach drop.

"The life you had with him — the house, the stability, the man you thought he was — none of it started the way you think."

I gripped the letter tighter.

"Ethan.

Tell me right now."

He opened his mouth.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen and went completely still.

"Who is it?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

He just stared at the name on the screen like he'd seen a gh0st.

"Ethan.

Who is calling you at this hour?"

He slowly looked up at me.

"It's someone who was never supposed to contact us again," he said.

"Someone Michael was certain was g0ne for good."
