Chapter 1: The Promise He Made Me Keep

My husband asked me to marry his best friend as his final wish — on our wedding night, my new husband said, "You need to know the real reason he asked us to do this."
Michael was the kind of husband women pray for.
We had been married for 15 years and had three children.
Life wasn't perfect, but we had each other, and that was enough.
Until we learned that Michael had cancer.
Stage four.
There was nothing the doctors could do to save him.
I never left his side, not even for a moment, and I kept believing we had more time.
Until one evening, he gripped my wrist with startling strength.
"Promise me one thing."
"Anything," I said.
"Marry Ethan after I'm gone."
I pulled my hand away.
Ethan was his childhood best friend and our children's godfather.
"How can you ask me that?
And Ethan, of all people?"
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
"Please.
Don't ask why.
Just promise.
It's my final wish."
He passed the next day.
Those were his final words to me.
For months, I ignored that promise.
But Ethan was always there — repairing the porch Michael had left unfinished, teaching our son to shave, sitting through our daughter's school play with tears shining in his eyes.
Finally, I told him what Michael had asked.
Ethan went pale.
"He asked me, too," he whispered.
I made one thing clear.
"I loved my husband.
Nothing can ever change that."
"I know," Ethan replied.
"I would never try."
He never crossed any boundaries.
But he was the reason my grief over losing Michael slowly became easier to carry.
One day, I agreed to marry him.
Yet throughout our small backyard wedding, Ethan looked as though he were attending a funeral.
His hands trembled as he placed the ring on my finger.
That night, I found him sitting on the edge of the bed, his face buried in his hands.
"Ethan?
What happened?"
He looked up, and tears rolled down his cheeks.
"You have no idea who you really married.
Your entire life has been built on a lie," he said.
"Michael should have told you sooner."
My heart sank.
"Stop.
You're scaring me."
My mind raced through countless possibilities — from Michael asking Ethan to protect our family after his death to the most horrifying explanations imaginable.
But none of them was worse than the truth.
Because in the next moment, Ethan reached into his pocket and unfolded a worn piece of paper.
"You need to know the real reason Michael asked us to do this," he said.
"And when you do, I'll understand if you hate me."

What is written on that piece of paper?
