Chapter 2: The Name She Had Never Heard

Part 2 ⬇️

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

I tore open the envelope.

Inside was a single printed receipt — not for our room.

It was a separate reservation.

A private meeting room, booked for Tuesday evening.

The night Tony said he'd gone to bed early because he was tired.

"Who was in that room?" I asked.

The manager hesitated.

"A woman came to the desk asking for him by name.

She said she was expected."

The floor felt like it shifted under me.

"What did she look like?"

"I really shouldn't say more." She paused.

"But she left something at the desk when she couldn't reach him.

We were going to throw it away, but…"

She reached under the counter and placed a small gift bag beside the envelope.

Inside was a children's book.

A handwritten note was tucked inside the front cover.

*For Lily.

I'm sorry I couldn't be there sooner.

— Aunt Rachel*

My throat closed.

Tony has never once mentioned anyone named Rachel.

Not in six years.

I looked up through the glass doors.

Tony was still at the car, lifting the last bag into the trunk.

He looked up and smiled at me.

I didn't smile back.

Who is Rachel?

And what does she know about my daughter that I don't?
