Chapter 1: The Last Wish
My husband and I took our daughter on the trip she had dreamed of as her final wish — on our last day, the manager stopped me and whispered, "There's one thing about this trip your husband never told you."
Lily's biological father passed away before she was born, so for years, it was just the two of us.
Then Tony came into our lives.
He never asked Lily to call him Dad or tried to replace the father she had never known.
He simply showed up — during hospital visits, sleepless nights, and every frightening appointment.
By the time we married, Lily was calling him Dad all on her own.
"Dad, why can't I run around like the other kids?" she would ask.
"Why do I always have to stay in bed?"
Tony never let her see him cry.
Then her doctor told us the treatments had stopped working.
Lily was only ten, but she understood enough to ask the question that shattered us both.
"How much time do I have left?"
That evening, she told us she had one final wish: to see Cinderella's castle and dip her toes in the ocean.
We had almost no savings.
Tony took every extra shift he could find, and I sold the bracelet my mother had left me.
Somehow, we scraped together enough to take Lily to Florida.
For five beautiful days, she laughed more than she had in the entire previous year.
We took hundreds of pictures, ate melting ice cream in the sunshine, and smiled until our faces hurt.
For once, her illness wasn't the center of every conversation.
On our final morning, Lily was asleep upstairs, her Minnie ears resting beside her pillow.
Tony stepped outside to load the car while I stopped at the front desk to check out.
The manager typed in our room number, then glanced through the glass doors at Tony.
Her smile disappeared.
My stomach tightened.
"Is something wrong?" I asked.
Without answering, she slid a sealed envelope across the counter.
"I'm so sorry," she murmured.
"I assumed you already knew."
My fingers trembled as I picked it up.
"Knew what?"
She looked toward Tony again, leaned closer, and lowered her voice.
"There's something important about this trip that your husband kept from you.
It has nothing to do with the bill."
