Chapter 2: The Birthmark That Changed Everything

Part 2 ⬇️

I forced myself to sit up, even though every part of me was screaming in pain.

"Show me," I said.

"Show me right now."

Nathan carried our third daughter to my bedside.

With a shaking hand, he pulled back the edge of her blanket and tilted her tiny head to the side.

There was a birthmark on her neck.

Small.

Dark.

Shaped almost like a crescent moon.

I didn't understand.

"Nathan, that's just a birthmark.

That doesn't mean—"

"My brother has the exact same one." His voice dropped to almost nothing.

"In the exact same place.

I've known about it my whole life.

It only shows up in his family line."

The room went cold.

"What are you saying?" I whispered.

He couldn't look at me.

"I'm saying this baby doesn't look like mine.

I'm saying I need to know the truth." His jaw was tight.

"Were you ever with my brother?"

I couldn't breathe.

The machines beside me kept beeping.

The other two babies were still in their bassinets, sleeping.

And then the door opened.

My mother-in-law stepped in with flowers and a smile — and the moment she saw the baby in Nathan's arms, she stopped completely.

She looked at the birthmark.

And her face went white.

What does Nathan's mother know — and why did she go pale the moment she saw that birthmark?
