Chapter 2: The Name on the Paper
The room went completely silent.
My mother-in-law blinked.
For the first time in nine years, she didn't have a quick answer.
I didn't raise my voice again.
I walked calmly to the kitchen drawer, pulled out a folder, and set it on the dining table in front of everyone.
"What is that?" she asked.
"The mortgage documents," I said.
"Would you like to see whose name is on them?"
Her smile slowly disappeared.
My husband stood up from his chair.
He already knew what was in that folder.
He had signed those papers with me.
He looked at his mother and said quietly, "Mom.
Stop."
But she wasn't ready to stop.
She turned to the relatives and laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous.
My son built this life.
She's acting like—"
"Like the co-owner?" I said.
"Because I am."
Then my sister-in-law, who had been sitting quietly in the corner the whole time, suddenly stood up.
Her face had gone pale.
"Mom," she said.
"There's something else she doesn't know yet."
Everyone turned to look at her.
My husband's expression changed completely.
He said one word — her name — like a warning.
But it was too late.
