Chapter 1: The Proposal He Never Meant to Make

My high school sweetheart refused to marry me for 11 years, but changed his mind when he found out I'd inherited a lake house — I agreed, but on one condition.

Glenn and I had been together for 11 years.

We'd been dating since high school, and the only thing missing was a ring on my finger.

Every time I brought up marriage, he would always say things like:

"A wedding?

No.

We still need to buy a new car!"

Or:

"What's the difference?

We already live together.

What would change after we got married?"

I kept telling Glenn I didn't need some huge, expensive wedding.

It was simply important to me that we become a real family.

But he kept brushing me off anyway.

Then one day, I came home from work early.

I unlocked the front door and was about to step into the kitchen, where Glenn was talking on the phone.

That's when I heard him laugh and say:

"I'm going to propose to her.

I'm just waiting until the house is officially in her name.

I never saw her as my wife, and I was already planning to leave her.

But soon she'll have the house, so I can use her.

As soon as we get married, I'll convince her to add my name to the deed.

She still believes every word I say like a complete idiot."

I pressed myself against the wall, completely stunned.

Then I quietly slipped out of the house, hurried to my car, and drove away before he could notice me.

My grandfather had passed away a month earlier and left me his lake house, and of course, I'd told Glenn about it.

I truly loved Glenn.

But he clearly didn't love me.

All those years, I'd just been convenient for him.

And now he wanted to st*al from me too?

No.

That wasn't going to happen.

It was time for Glenn to learn his lesson.

I went back home and pretended I knew nothing.

I told Glenn that the lake house was already officially in my name.

The very next evening, he took me out to dinner.

And guess what?

He proposed.

I smiled and said:

"Of course.

My answer is yes.

But I have one condition.

You have to agree to it, or there won't be a wedding."

He smiled and asked:

"What condition?"

Oh, you should've seen the look on Glenn's face.

What was the one condition she gave Glenn?
