Chapter 3: What the Silence Said

Katherine reached us before Daniel answered.
She stopped about two feet away, her eyes moving from Daniel to me and back again.
She had the careful smile of a woman who had learned to read a room fast.
"Daniel," she said.
Not a question.
A greeting.
Familiar.
Easy.
That was the word that landed wrong.
Not *hello*.
Not *oh, you're here too*.
Just his name.
Like she'd said it before.
Daniel dropped his arm from my shoulder.
"Katherine." His voice was level.
"I didn't expect to see you here."
"Small world," she said.
I looked at my husband.
"How do you two know each other?"
He turned to me, and for just a moment — one moment — his eyes went somewhere else before they came back.
"We worked together," he said.
"Years ago.
Before you and I met."
Katherine's smile didn't move.
"That's right.
A long time ago."
Jason was still standing there, completely forgotten by everyone including himself.
His drink was in his hand and he hadn't taken a sip.
He was watching Katherine the way a man watches something he can't control.
"What company?" I asked.
"Merritt & Cole," Daniel said.
"Katherine was in the marketing division."
"I left after about a year," she said.
"Moved on to other things."
She glanced at Jason then.
A short glance.
The kind that carries instructions.
Jason cleared his throat.
"Well.
This is — what a coincidence.
All of us here."
Nobody agreed with him.
I kept my voice steady.
"How long did you two work together?"
"Eight, nine months," Daniel said.
"Ten," Katherine said at the same moment.
A small silence opened between them.
Daniel picked up his drink.
"I don't remember exactly."
I set my glass down on the bar.
My hand was calm.
The rest of me was not.
There was something in the air between Daniel and Katherine that had nothing to do with me or Jason.
Something that had been there before either of us walked into this room.
I could feel the shape of it without being able to name it yet.
"Emily." Daniel touched my arm lightly.
"Are you all right?"
"I'm fine," I said.
"I just need some air."
I walked toward the exit.
Not fast.
Not slow.
I didn't look back.
Outside, the night was cool and the parking lot was quiet.
I stood near the edge of the building and breathed.
Ten months.
Not eight.
Not nine.
She had corrected him without thinking.
And he had let her.
My phone buzzed.
A text from an old classmate asking where I'd gone.
I put it back in my pocket.
The door behind me opened.
I expected Daniel.
It was Katherine.
She stood a few feet away, her arms loose at her sides, her expression different now that we were alone.
The careful smile was gone.
"I think we should talk," she said.
I turned to face her fully.
"I think so too."
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she said something I hadn't expected at all.
"I'm sorry.
For high school.
For everything Jason said to you back then.
I knew it was wrong and I didn't stop it.
I've thought about that more than you'd probably believe."
I didn't move.
"That's not what I came outside to talk about," I said.
Katherine's jaw tightened slightly.
"No.
I didn't think it was."
She looked back at the door.
Through the glass, I could see Daniel and Jason standing near the bar.
Daniel was talking.
Jason was nodding too quickly.
"How long?" I asked.
She turned back to me.
"Emily—"
"How long, Katherine?"
She looked at the ground.
Then up.
"It ended two years ago," she said quietly.
"I promise you it ended."
The parking lot was very still.
"Does Jason know?"
May you like
She didn't answer.
And that was answer enough.
