The man I brought over was my husband, Daniel.

He just happened to be Jason's boss.
Jason's face went completely white.
His mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Daniel put his arm around me and smiled.
"Jason.
I didn't know you two knew each other."
Jason looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"I…
we don't.
I mean, we were just talking."
I tilted my head and said sweetly, "Oh, we did know each other, Jason.
A long time ago.
You just didn't recognize me."
The color drained from his face even further.
Across the room, Katherine was watching.
She had no idea what was happening, but she could see her husband frozen in front of a woman she didn't recognize.
She started walking toward us.
And that's when I noticed something I hadn't expected.
The way Daniel looked at Katherine when she got closer.
Not with confusion.
Not with indifference.
With recognition.
I turned to my husband and asked quietly, "Daniel…
do you know her?"
He didn't answer right away.
And in that half-second of silence, something cold moved through my chest.
