Chapter 1: The Mask Comes Off

"My Future Mother-in-Law Locked the Front Door and Demanded My ATM Card to Pay for the Wedding.

When I Refused, She Shoved Me Against the Wall While I Was Four Months Pregnant.

My Fiancé Blocked the Only Exit and Called Me Selfish.

I Looked Him Straight in the Eye, Slowly Lifted One Leg — and Drove My Heel Straight Down Onto His Foot Hard Enough That He Finally Understood Exactly Whose Money He'd Spent Two Years Living On.

I was four months pregnant with our first child.

Our wedding was six weeks away.

I'd spent years building a thriving digital marketing agency from the ground up.

I owned my house, paid every bill myself, believed I'd built a life no one could take from me.

My only mistake was falling in love with Weston.

His struggling tech startup had survived for years only because his mother refused to let it fail — and because I quietly kept covering the bills whenever another crisis appeared.

That afternoon, we sat in Corinne's suffocating living room discussing wedding expenses.

"The florist needs another ten thousand today for imported white orchids," she said.

"The caterer wants a seventy-five percent deposit for the lobster and Wagyu menu."

"I've already paid eighty thousand dollars," I replied.

"The venue's paid.

The band's paid.

I'm not draining my savings weeks before my baby is born.

We're serving chicken."

Weston finally glanced up from his phone.

"Come on, babe.

It's our wedding.

You have the money sitting there.

Think of it as an investment."

"An investment?" I said softly.

"You haven't contributed a single dollar.

Your company hasn't made a profit in over two years.

I'm paying for everything, and I'm not spending another cent."

I picked up my purse and stood.

I expected complaints.

I didn't expect the mask to disappear entirely.

"Sit down, Ava," Corinne ordered.

"You're not leaving."

Before I reached the door, Weston rushed past me — not for my hand, for the brass deadbolt.

Click.

He folded his arms, standing directly in front of the only exit.

He wasn't looking at his pregnant fiancée.

He was looking at a locked bank account.

Corinne stepped inches from my face.

"Give me your ATM card.

And your PIN."

"Have you both lost your minds?

Open the door."

She shoved me hard against the wall.

Pain shot through my back.

Both hands flew to my stomach.

"Hand over the card," she hissed.

"Or the wedding is canceled." Then she smiled.

"A pregnant woman like you should be grateful any respectable man still wants you."

They expected me to cry.

They expected me to give in.

Instead, I looked Weston straight in the eye, slowly lifted one leg, and drove my heel down as hard as I could.

What did Ava do next — and what happened when she finally walked out that door?
