Chapter 2: Now You Know How It Feels

The crane didn't move toward the entrance.
It swung slowly toward Jacqueline's car — a brand-new white SUV she'd parked right at the front of the venue, where everyone could see it.
Bruce had asked the operator to lift it and move it to the far end of the field.
In front of every guest.
Jacqueline's mouth fell open.
"Bruce, stop this right now."
"You paid for the whole day," he said calmly.
"We're getting our money's worth."
"That is my car!"
"And this is my wedding."
People had stopped talking.
Everyone was watching.
A few had their phones out.
Jacqueline grabbed his arm.
"You're embarrassing me."
Bruce looked at her hand, then at her face.
"Now you know how it feels."
She let go.
The SUV rose six feet off the ground, slow and steady, spinning slightly in the morning breeze.
Someone started clapping.
Then more joined.
But I wasn't celebrating yet.
Because I saw Jacqueline pull out her own phone — and I saw who she called.
Her expression shifted from humiliated to something colder.
Something planned.
Whatever she said into that phone, she said it quietly, with her back turned.
And when she hung up, she looked straight at me — not at Bruce.
At me.
And she smiled.
---
What did Jacqueline just set in motion — and why was that smile meant for her?
The full story gets darker before it gets better.
