Chapter 1: The Crane at the Wedding

My future MIL hired a crane for our wedding and told my fiancé, "You'll need help lifting her"—what he did with it next made her jaw drop.
My future MIL, Jacqueline, had been commenting on my weight since the day Bruce proposed.
I'd gained about eighteen pounds during the hardest year of my life.
My mother had cancer, and for months I drove her to treatments before work, slept badly, and practically lived on hospital sandwiches.
By the time Mom went into remission, my body had changed a little.
Jacqueline knew exactly why.
That didn't stop her.
At dress shopping, she asked whether the boutique had "extra reinforcement."
At Christmas, she moved the pie away from me and joked, "I'm protecting the wedding photos."
Bruce shut her down every time.
"Mom, stop."
She'd laugh.
"She knows I'm joking."
I stopped laughing months ago.
Still, I never expected what she did on our wedding day.
Our ceremony was at a country venue.
That morning, one of my bridesmaids rushed into the bridal suite.
"You need to see what's outside."
Through the window, I spotted a yellow crane truck beside the lawn with a huge white bow hanging from its hook.
At first, I assumed the venue was having construction done.
Then Jacqueline appeared below us, waving toward it as guests arrived.
When Bruce walked over, confused, she grinned.
"Surprise!"
"What is that doing here?"
Jacqueline laughed loudly enough for several relatives to hear.
"I thought I'd save your back tonight."
Bruce stared at her.
She pointed at the crane.
"When you carry the bride over the threshold, you'll need help lifting her."
A couple of people laughed awkwardly.
My face burned.
Then Jacqueline noticed me at the window and waved.
"Don't worry, sweetheart!
I made sure it can handle the weight!"
That silenced every laugh.
Bruce's expression changed.
He didn't yell.
"You rented this?"
Jacqueline smiled.
"For the whole day.
Funny, right?"
"And you paid for it?"
"Of course."
Bruce nodded slowly.
"Good."
Something in his voice made her smile weaken.
He took out his phone and walked straight toward the crane operator.
"Bruce?" Jacqueline called.
He ignored her.
I watched him show the man something on his screen and point across the venue.
The operator hesitated, then glanced at Jacqueline.
"You really want me to do that?"
Bruce looked straight at his mother.
"Absolutely."
Jacqueline's face went blank.
And when the crane started moving, she realized what Bruce had planned for her.

What did Bruce tell that operator to do — and why did Jacqueline's face go pale?
