Chapter 2: The Call That Changed Everything
Ryan pulled out his phone and called his father.
Right there.
In front of Mavis.
"Dad, I need you to hear something." He put it on speaker and set it on the counter.
Then he turned to his mother.
"Tell him what happened.
Exactly what you told us."
Mavis's face went white.
"Ryan, this is not the time—"
"Tell him."
Silence.
His father's voice came through the phone.
"Mavis?
What's going on?"
She didn't answer.
So Ryan did.
He told him everything.
The guest list fights.
The venue demands.
The ninety-six invitations.
The bucket of gray water sitting right there on my kitchen floor.
Then he said the part that made her scream.
"Dad, we're moving the wedding date up.
Three weeks from now.
Small ceremony.
Just the people who were already on our list."
Mavis slammed her hand on the counter.
"You would not dare—"
"We already would." Ryan didn't raise his voice once.
"And if you try to interfere again, you won't be on the list either."
His father said nothing for a long moment.
Then, quietly: "Son…
I think that's fair."
Mavis looked at her husband like he had betrayed her.
And then her phone buzzed.
She glanced down at the screen — and whatever she saw drained every bit of color from her face.
