Chapter 1: The Bucket of Gray Water

My future MIL dumped all our stamped wedding invitations into a bucket of dirty water and swore it was "just a mishap"—what my fiancé did next was her worst nightmare.
My future MIL, Mavis, had been fighting us over our wedding for months.
She wanted a bigger venue, a different menu, and eighteen extra relatives my fiancé, Ryan, barely knew.
The worst fight came when we finalized the guest list and Ryan told her, "No more additions.
This is our wedding."
A week later, I finally finished all ninety-six invitations.
I had spent three evenings checking addresses, sticking on labels, and putting stamps on envelopes until my fingers ached.
When the last one was done, I stacked them neatly in the exact middle of our dining table.
I even took a photo from above and sent it to Ryan at work.
"FINALLY DONE.
Tomorrow they go in the mail!"
That morning, I had cleaned the entire house because Ryan's parents were coming for dinner.
Mavis knew it.
I'd even mentioned it to her about spending two hours vacuuming, dusting, and mopping.
There was no reason to clean my floors again.
Still, when I came back from a quick grocery run, Mavis was standing in my kitchen beside a bucket of gray water.
My invitations were inside it.
All ninety-six.
The envelopes had swollen and split.
Ink bled down the sides.
Stamps floated beside soggy address labels.
"What happened?"
Mavis shrugged.
"Oh, honey, don't panic.
I was washing the floor, bumped the table, and they slid right into the bucket.
Just a mishap."
I looked at the table.
Then at the bucket.
The invitations had been in the middle.
Not near the edge.
Not even close.
"You were mopping?
I told you I already mopped this morning."
Her mouth tightened.
"Well, clearly you missed a spot."
Ryan walked in twenty minutes later and found me trying to separate wet envelopes with trembling hands.
Mavis spoke first.
"Tell her she's overreacting.
It was an accident."
I showed Ryan the photo I'd sent him: ninety-six perfect invitations stacked dead center on the table.
He stared at it.
Then at his mother.
"You're sure you want to call this a mishap?"
Mavis crossed her arms.
"Because that's what it was."
Ryan nodded once.
Then he looked at me.
"Don't reorder a single invitation."
I blinked.
"What?"
Mavis's smile faltered.
Ryan reached for my hand.
What he did next made no sense to me at first.
But the moment Mavis understood, she started screaming.
