Chapter 1: The Veil She Ruined

My future MIL covered my bridal veil with wine corks knowing I'd been sober for 10 years — what my fiancé did when he saw it left her speechless.
Ten years before my wedding, alcohol had nearly destroyed my life.
My father had walked out, my mother was drowning in debt, and I was working two jobs while pretending I could handle everything.
Somewhere along the way, one glass at night became several, and several became something I couldn't control.
Getting sober was the hardest thing I'd ever done.
I hadn't touched alcohol in ten years.
My fiancé, Kevin, knew the whole story and never once made me ashamed of it.
His mother, Patricia, was different.
She found out six months before our wedding after asking why I never drank at family dinners.
"Ten years?" she said.
"That's impressive.
Although I suppose you never really know when someone might slip."
Kevin immediately told her to stop.
After that, she occasionally offered me wine with an innocent smile or joked that champagne at the wedding might "test my willpower."
I learned to ignore her.
On my wedding morning, Patricia offered to collect my veil from the seamstress and bring it to the bridal suite.
She arrived carrying the garment bag and grinning.
"I added a little personal touch."
When she unfolded the veil, my bridesmaid actually gasped.
Dozens of wine corks had been tied along the delicate lace edge with thin ivory ribbons.
Real corks.
Some still had winery names stamped across them.
I stared at them, unable to speak.
Patricia laughed.
"Oh, don't look so horrified.
I thought your veil should tell your story."
"You knew what those years did to me."
"Exactly." She lifted one cork.
"Ten years sober deserves a souvenir."
My eyes burned.
"Take them off."
Patricia rolled her eyes.
"Honestly, if you're truly over it, why does this bother you so much?"
That was when the bridal-suite door opened.
Kevin stepped in.
He had come looking for his mother because the photographer needed the family downstairs.
Then he saw me clutching the veil.
His eyes moved to the corks.
"What is that?"
Patricia smiled.
"My little surprise.
Cute, isn't it?"
Kevin didn't answer.
He walked over, took the veil gently from my hands, and examined every cork.
Then he looked at his mother.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Finally, Kevin reached into his jacket.
What he did next wiped the smile off Patricia's face so fast that even my bridesmaids went silent.

What did Kevin pull out — and what did he say to Patricia in front of everyone?
