Chapter 6: Vivian at the Gate

She was standing at the intercom panel when I reached the front door.

I could see her on the security monitor — a small, composed woman in a grey coat, her handbag held in front of her with both hands like a shield.

I pressed the intercom.

**"Vivian."**

**"Olivia."** Her voice was smooth.

Practiced.

**"I think it's time we spoke woman to woman.

Without Ryan."**

**"Say what you came to say from there."**

A pause.

She adjusted her handbag.

**"You're making a very serious mistake,"** she said.

**"Ryan is impulsive.

He makes poor decisions under pressure.

But he loves those children, and what you're doing — cutting off the accounts, filing papers — it's going to damage them.

Is that what you want?"**

**"My children are inside this house with their grandmother,"** I said.

**"They're fine."**

**"Their grandmother."** Something shifted in her tone.

**"That woman has no business being involved in this family's affairs.

She never did.

I want you to understand that everything that happened in that house—"**

**"Was recorded,"** I said.

**"Every room.

Every day.

For the past two years."**

Silence.

**"I have footage of every afternoon you kept Margaret occupied while Ryan brought Diane into our home,"** I said.

**"I have the dates.

I have the timestamps.

I have your phone call from the night before I came back, where you told someone that once I signed, Ryan wouldn't need me anymore.

And I now have the development agreement with Gerald's company, the asset timeline Ryan wrote on a whiteboard, and his text messages discussing how far behind I'd be once the postnuptial was filed."**

Vivian didn't move.

Her hands tightened on the handbag.

**"You've been busy,"** she said quietly.

**"I landed three hours early."**

**"Olivia."** Her voice shifted again — lower, more careful.

**"You're a smart woman.

You always have been.

That's why I'm here.

Because smart people don't burn everything down.

They negotiate."**

**"What are you offering?"**

**"Ryan will drop the asset claim on the mansion.

He'll agree to a clean split of the marital home and a reasonable settlement.

Vivian's medical expenses—"** she caught herself, **"my medical expenses — will not be part of any counter-claim.

Everyone walks away intact."**

**"And Gerald's development deal?"**

A beat too long before she answered.

**"That has nothing to do with you."**

**"It has everything to do with me,"** I said.

**"My assets were the collateral.

My signature was the mechanism.

And your brother's name is on the agreement.

So yes, Vivian.

It has everything to do with me."**

She looked directly at the camera.

For the first time since I'd known her, she looked her age.

**"What do you want?"** she asked.

**"I want you to understand something,"** I said.

**"I'm not negotiating because I'm afraid.

I'm not settling because it's easier.

I'm going to let my lawyer handle every piece of this, and when it's finished, Ryan will have exactly what he came into this marriage with.

Which was nothing."**

**"You'll regret this,"** she said.

The smoothness was gone now.

**"Ryan has friends.

People who owe him favors.

You think a few camera recordings and some text messages are enough?

He will make this ugly."**

**"He already made it ugly,"** I said.

**"He made it ugly the first time he raised his hand to my mother."**

Vivian's chin lifted slightly.

**"I never touched her,"** she said.

**"The camera in the kitchen hallway disagrees."**

Her mouth opened.

Closed.

**"Go home, Vivian,"** I said.

**"Or go to Ryan's.

Or go to Gerald's.

But you're not coming through this gate."**

I released the intercom button.

On the monitor, I watched her stand there for a long moment.

Then she turned and walked back to her car.

She didn't look back.

But before she opened the car door, she made a phone call.

She was still on it when she drove away.

Margaret appeared behind me.

**"What did she want?"** she asked.

**"To negotiate."**

**"And?"**

**"She'll try something else,"** I said.

**"She's already making calls."**

Margaret was quiet for a moment.

Then: **"Should we be worried?"**

I looked at the empty street outside.

**"Let her try,"** I said.

But that night, at 11:47 p.m., my attorney called.

**"Ryan's legal team just filed an emergency motion,"** Claire said.

**"They're claiming the security footage was obtained illegally and requesting an injunction to have it suppressed."**

**"Can they get it?"**

**"Probably not.

But it buys them time, and it means a hearing.

There's something else."** A pause.

**"They've also filed a petition for temporary primary custody of Oliver and Emma.

They're arguing that your unilateral decision to remove the children from the marital home constitutes instability."**

The word landed like something physical.

**"Custody,"** I said.

May you like

**"It's a pressure tactic,"** Claire said.

**"But we have to respond."**
