Chapter 2: The Sister Who Never Left

The manager had done exactly what I asked.
He'd called Karen's credit card company — the one she'd used to make the reservation — and flagged the table as a dine-and-dash.
Karen had left her name on the booking.
That was her first mistake.
"You reported me?" she shrieked.
"Do you know how embarrassing that is?"
"Do you know how embarrassing it was for my mom to sit alone at that table for thirty minutes?" I said.
"Waiting for a woman who snuck out the back?"
Silence.
Then her voice turned cold.
"You're going to regret this.
My son will hear about what you did."
"Good," I said.
"Tell him everything."
I hung up and turned to my mom.
She was still shaking, her hands wrapped around a glass of water the waiter had brought her.
She looked so small sitting there in that big restaurant.
That's when the waiter leaned over and said quietly:
"Miss — you should know.
The woman who left first?
She came back in through the side entrance about ten minutes ago.
She was watching from near the bar."
My bl00d ran cold.
Karen's sister had never actually left.
She had stayed to watch my mom struggle with that bill.
This wasn't just cheap.
This was planned.
And suddenly I realized — my fiancé might already know what his mother had done.

What my fiancé said when I confronted him that night was something I never expected to hear.
