Chapter 1: The Ring Box Was Empty

My fiancé's 8-year-old daughter was supposed to carry our wedding rings down the aisle — but when I saw WHAT SHE BROUGHT INSTEAD, I went pale and stopped the wedding.
My first real relationship began when I was 35 and met Connor.
He turned out to be the best man I had ever known.
But the person who truly won me over was his 8-year-old daughter, Lily.
Our first meeting was awkward.
But a few months later, she started asking me to braid her hair.
Then came bedtime talks, Saturday pancakes, and little notes she hid in my purse.
One of them said, "I hope Daddy marries you."
So when Connor finally proposed, Lily squealed louder than I did.
Of course she was going to carry our rings.
Everything felt perfect until three weeks before the wedding, when Connor suddenly said,
"There's something I need to ask you."
He rubbed the back of his neck before continuing.
"I want Rachel at the wedding."
His ex-wife.
Lily's mother.
I actually laughed because I thought he was joking.
"You want your EX-WIFE to watch you marry me?"
Connor sighed.
"Rachel and I haven't been husband and wife for years, but she's still Lily's mother.
Lily wants her there, and I don't want our wedding to make her feel like she has to choose between us."
I didn't love it.
But it made sense.
So I said yes.
On the wedding day, Rachel arrived alone.
She hugged Lily, congratulated Connor, then turned to me.
"You look beautiful," she said.
There was nothing openly strange about her, yet when she hugged me, her hand stayed on my shoulder a second too long.
The ceremony was about to begin, and for a while, I forgot all about Rachel.
Then, as everyone was getting into place for the procession, I happened to glance toward the back of the garden.
Rachel was crouched in front of Lily.
My little girl stood there with a troubled look on her face.
Well, Rachel was her mother.
Maybe Lily was upset about something completely unrelated.
I had absolutely no reason to worry.
Then the ceremony began.
Lily appeared at the end of the aisle.
She walked toward us slowly, clutching the ring box against the front of her white dress.
When she finally reached us, she looked first at her father, then at me with tears in her eyes.
Because there were NO RINGS in the ring box.
Instead, Lily held something out with both trembling hands.
The second Connor saw it, every drop of color drained from his face.
"Lily," he rasped.
"Where did you get THAT?"
The whole world seemed to tilt beneath my feet.
"Connor..." I whispered.
"What IS this?
When were you planning to tell me about it?"
