Chapter 1: The Man Who Had a Place

My father kicked me out after I married his driver — 8 years later, he came to meet his grandchildren for the first time and screamed, "How is this possible?"

Growing up in my father's house meant following rules about practically everything.

Which schools were acceptable.

Which families we associated with.

Even which fork belonged beside which plate.

And apparently, he also got to decide who I could marry.

I was twenty-seven when I told him about Liam.

Liam had been his driver for six years.

He knew every shortcut, airport route, and back entrance my father used.

But to me, he was simply a quiet, decent man who treated me like a person instead of another possession in my father's house.

When I announced we were getting married, Dad actually laughed.

"You will not bring that man into this family," he said.

Liam stood beside me wearing the same navy suit he wore while driving my father to charity events.

"He has a name," I said.

Dad looked straight at him.

"No," he said.

"He has a place."

That was enough.

I packed my things.

By the next morning, my bank account was frozen and my key card to the house no longer worked.

Eight years passed without a single call from my father.

Not when our son was born.

Not when our daughter spent six days in the NICU.

Not while Liam worked nights so I could finish nursing school.

The hardest moments were birthdays, when my children asked about the grandfather they'd only seen in old photographs.

Then, last Sunday, a black car pulled up outside our little house.

My father stepped out.

He looked older and thinner, carrying a silver gift bag in one hand.

Liam immediately went still beside me.

Before I could react, the kids ran onto the porch.

Dad looked at my son.

Then my daughter.

Suddenly, all the color drained from his face.

The gift bag slipped from his hand and landed on the steps.

"How is this possible?" he screamed.
