Chapter 1: The Door They Shut

My ex refused to help our newborn, saying she was "my responsibility and my problem" — but what his own mother did next left everyone stunned.

Weeks before my daughter was born, my husband, Eric, left me for his mistress.

He emptied our savings, called my pregnancy "a burden," and walked out.

It was ugly.

The stress made me ill.

Doctors rushed me into an emergency C-section, and Chloe spent her first days under the NICU lights.

She came home needing breathing treatments I could barely afford.

So I called Eric.

"Please.

You took our savings.

She needs her father."

He sighed as though I had interrupted dinner.

"You chose to keep her.

She's your responsibility and your problem."

Then he chuckled.

"Ask someone who cares.

Definitely not me."

I drove to his house with Chloe in her carrier.

Every porch step pulled at my healing incision, but I still knocked.

His new girlfriend opened the door wearing his shirt and rolled her eyes.

"Eric, your baby mama's here looking for another handout," she laughed.

"Just look at your daughter," I begged.

"I'm not asking for money for myself.

I only need it for her treatment."

Eric glanced at Chloe, then sighed.

"I have a life now.

Stop showing up with your little brat."

They shut the door.

By the time I got home, I had wept until there were no tears left.

I had nowhere else to turn.

So I called the last person I ever expected to trust: Eric's mother, Barbara.

We had never gotten along, and I had never complained to her about her son.

After I told her everything, the line went silent.

"He didn't even tell me you were pregnant," she finally said.

"I'll be there soon."

An hour later, Barbara arrived with her coat thrown over her pajamas.

She lifted Chloe gently and cooed to her.

I never imagined that the woman who had always been so cold toward me would become the one person I could lean on.

Then she said, "I have a plan to teach Eric and that little girlfriend of his a lesson for everything they've done.

No man gets to humiliate the woman who carried his child."

As Barbara explained her plan, I couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry.

But what she had come up with was brilliant.

Eric would never forget it.

At dawn, I left Chloe with my neighbor.

Barbara and I drove to Eric's house, placed something outside his front door, then parked out of sight and waited.

The moment he stepped outside and saw what we had prepared, he screamed, "Oh my God!

Who did this?!"

But that was only the beginning.

Eric had no idea what we had prepared for him and his girlfriend.

What did Barbara put outside that door — and what happens when Eric realizes who's behind it?
