Chapter 1: The Woman Next Door

My ex-MIL was using my outdoor faucet to fill her pool and refused to pay my huge water bill — so I put her in her place.
When my husband, Harold, and I were still married, his mother, Diana, decided she wanted to live closer to her son.
Diana sold her house and bought a place right next door to us.
And let me tell you, it was HELL.
She was constantly stepping into our house without permission and using whatever she wanted.
She could walk in, take groceries from the fridge, and tell me:
"Just buy more.
We're family.
I need food too."
She could come over and dump her trash in my bins because she "didn't want to pay for her own," and so on.
I tried to keep the peace.
Eventually, Harold and I got divorced, but Diana continued living next door.
Then last month, I got my water bill.
It had suddenly DOUBLED.
At first, I assumed I had a leak.
I checked the toilets, faucets, and sprinkler system.
Nothing.
And my kids had gone to stay with my mom for the entire summer, while I spent most of my days working at the office.
Normally, my bill should've gone DOWN.
Instead, it had gone up.
Then one early morning, I heard a noise outside my window.
I looked out, and my stomach dropped.
Diana was walking onto my side of the yard carrying a long garden hose.
She CONNECTED it to my outdoor faucet and ran the hose back through a gap in her fence.
I rushed outside and saw that the hose led directly to HER POOL.
I immediately walked over to her and demanded to know what on earth she was doing.
She smiled and said:
"Oh, what's the big deal?
Yeah, I use your water to fill my pool, water my lawn...
I'd rather save money on water and spend it on something FOR MYSELF."
My expression hardened.
"Diana, you're using my water WITHOUT permission!
I just got a HUGE water bill.
So maybe YOU should pay it?"
She laughed right in my face and said:
"God, you're so stingy!
We're family, so I'm NOT PAYING ANYTHING!"
I stood there while she went on and on about how I was a "stingy member of the family," how "her son was unlucky to be with me," how I had been "a terrible homemaker," and so on.
I used to put up with it.
Not anymore.
Diana needed to learn HER LESSON.
So I went to the HOA and told them SOMETHING about Diana.
Something NO one else knew.
Oh, the very next day, I heard her SCREAMING from the other side of the fence.
And I just kept smiling because that was only the beginning.
---
What did she tell the HOA — and why did it make Diana SCREAM the next morning?
