Chapter 2: The Box at the Door

Inside the box was my cake.
Not the one Janice had thrown away.
A new one.
A beautiful one, with white roses around the edges and "Happy 60th Birthday" written across the top in gold.
Janice stared at it like it was a threat.
Her boss looked at her calmly.
"I heard it was your mother-in-law's birthday tonight." He paused.
"My wife is her friend.
She called me this afternoon, quite upset."
The room had gone completely quiet.
Janice's colleagues were watching from the dining table — the same table covered in food I had cooked.
"I don't understand," Janice said.
Her voice had lost all its confidence.
"I think you do," he said.
Then he looked at me again and stepped forward.
"I'm sorry we interrupted your evening." He handed me the cake himself.
"This dinner should have been yours."
Janice turned to me, and for the first time all night, she looked uncertain.
But it was what her boss said next — quietly, just to her — that made her face go white.
She didn't move for a long moment.
Then her phone buzzed on the table.
She looked down at the screen.
And whatever she saw there was worse than anything her boss had just told her.
