Chapter 1: The Cake She Threw Away

My DIL threw my 60th birthday cake in the trash and took over my house for her promotion dinner—then her boss arrived with a box that made her go pale.

I had been looking forward to my sixtieth birthday for weeks.

My son, Aaron, was away on a work trip, but I still planned a small dinner at home with eight close friends.

I spent two days cooking everyone's favorite dishes, set out the good china, hung gold-and-white decorations, and baked myself a chocolate cake with "60" written across the top in pink icing.

Then my daughter-in-law, Janice, arrived three hours before the party.

She stepped into the dining room, glanced at the balloons, and frowned.

"What is all this?"

"My birthday dinner."

Her expression changed.

"You can't have people here tonight.

My boss and several colleagues are coming over."

I stared at her.

"Tonight?"

"This promotion is basically mine if I impress them.

I need the house to look professional."

I reminded her that eight people were already coming.

Janice rolled her eyes.

"You're sixty, not sixteen.

Celebrate next weekend."

Before I could answer, she began pulling down the decorations and popping balloons with a fork.

Then she picked up my cake.

"What are you doing?"

"This looks cheap."

She dropped it into the trash.

I felt something inside me crack.

But when Janice noticed the roast, potatoes, salad, and appetizers I'd spent all morning preparing, her mood suddenly shifted.

"At least I won't have to order catering."

She carried everything into the dining room and started arranging my food on serving platters.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I went upstairs and called my guests one by one.

"I'm sorry.

I'm not feeling well tonight."

By the fifth call, my voice was trembling.

Soon laughter drifted up from downstairs.

Glasses clinked, music played, and then I heard Janice say brightly, "I made everything myself."

I sat on the edge of my bed and wept.

Nearly an hour later, a scream came from downstairs.

I jumped up, thinking someone had been hurt, and hurried toward the foyer.

Janice was standing completely still.

Her boss was at the front door.

He wasn't smiling.

In his hands was a large box.

He said something too quietly for me to hear, then handed it to her.

Janice opened the lid.

The color drained from her face.

"No," she whispered.

"You can't be serious."

Her boss said one more sentence.

Janice's hands began to shake.

Then he looked past Janice and saw me standing on the stairs.

And he winked.

The moment I saw what was inside, everything clicked.

Her boss hadn't come to celebrate her promotion.

He had come to teach Janice a lesson.
