Chapter 2: The Wrong Signature

Emily sat on the edge of the bed, the documents spread across her lap.
Her hands were shaking.
"I never signed this," she said.
"Dad, I swear I never signed this."
I believed her.
The signature looked close — but not exact.
The loop on the E was wrong.
Emily had always written her name the same way since she was twelve years old.
I took a photo of every page.
Then Emily's phone lit up on the nightstand.
It was Jason.
She stared at the screen for a moment, then put it on speaker.
"Where are you?" His voice was flat.
Annoyed.
"With my father."
"You need to come home.
Grace has a pediatric appointment tomorrow morning and I'm not doing it alone."
Emily looked at me.
Something shifted in her expression — not sadness.
Something harder.
"Jason," she said quietly.
"Did you use the car as collateral for a loan?"
Silence.
Three full seconds of silence.
"We can talk about that when you get home."
"Answer me."
"Emily, this isn't the time—"
She hung up.
We sat there without speaking.
Grace made a small sound from the bassinet in the corner.
Then I remembered something.
The handwriting on that note.
I had seen it before.
Not Jason's handwriting.
His mother's.
